Bullying Education – Teaching Children How to Get Along
Bullying education is something that is being introduced into schools worldwide. After many high profile media events in which students were the victims of violent crimes, schools have become aware that it is important to teach children not only how to deal with their own problems, but how to get along and deal with being bullied as well. This type of education is invaluable in preventing similar events from occurring again in the future.
Teaching Children the Effects of Bullying
Many bullies are unaware of how their actions negatively affect a person their entire lives. Since the majority of bullying acts are done in an effort to fit in or act cool, these bullies may think twice about what is being said for the sake of their reputation once they know that the person they hurt can develop low self esteem or self worth for a lifetime because of it.
Similarly, victims can learn the long term effects of being bullied, and can see why it is so important to stand up for themselves now before they are unable to any longer. Bullying education presents teachers with an opportune time to show students how one action can cause years of pain for another person.
Make the Lessons Interactive
It is essential that teachers and schools involve the students in their lessons, and allow them to share their personal experiences or feelings. By doing this, the whole experience really hits home, and bullies begin to understand that there is actually a real person behind the face that they have been taunting. Children will also be more likely to pay attention to and remember things that they had an active hand in.
Relate to Students and Make it Fun
You can’t expect to win students over with a cartoon on why bullying is bad. In fact, if you do not find a way to relate to the students and make the bullying education fun, then their chance of actually retaining that knowledge or listening are slim to none. If students are presented the information in a way that they think is cool or at least creative, then they will be more likely to follow the advice they receive.
By teaching bullying education in the schools, teachers are providing students with a valuable asset that will help them become more successful throughout their entire lives. This education will also prove to be helpful in warding off any school violence instances in the future.
